Group TherapyGroup therapy is generally conducted by a leader and includes between five and ten participants. This type of therapy has been found to be helpful for a wide variety of problems. Group therapy may be particularly useful for people who are shy, experience social discomfort and/or have difficulty making friendships. Other groups may be more specific in that their focus emphasizes such issues as: adjusting to loss of a parent or spouse, coping with divorce or other major life events, or coping with chronic illness and other medical conditions. Some groups can be long-term (lasting a year or more) while others have a definite time limit (eg. between 10 to 20 sessions). The key to success in group therapy is in establishing cohesiveness which is achieved by promoting a supportive, safe and non-threatening environment. |
